Midsummer Eve History

Midsummer is a celebration of the shortest night day and longest day of the year. In the northern hemisphere, this is a time for celebration as their northern position means that come the winter solstice, they will be without sunlight. At this holiday, the sun does not set in some of the most northerly parts. The celebration has Pagan origins and encompasses fertility rituals. Before celebrating Scandinavian’s take time to clean their houses and decorate them with flowers and other plants. Traditional food is served and the weekend is full of outdoor parties.

This holiday is observed on a Saturday between the 20th and 26th of June. Midsummer Eve is on June 24.

  • Listen to heavy metal. Finland produces more heavy metal than most countries of its size. Bands will be playing throughout Midsummer. Gigs are often held on Midsummer Eve. Well-known bands such as HIM, Nightwish or Amoprhis might be playing.
  • Light a bonfire. Fires were burnt in the old times to banish evil spirits and bad fortune.
