Golden Globe Awards History

The Golden Globe Awards recognize achievements in film and television. Awards are presented annually by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The Golden Globe Awards were founded by a group of writers in 1943 who wished to formally acknowledge the best films produced that year. Together, these writers established and represented The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The HFPA is made up of about 90 members.

In order to be nominated for the Golden Globes, a feature-length motion picture must be screened in Los Angeles between January 1 and December 31. HFPA members must be invited to the screening. A nomination ballot is sent to each member with a list of motion pictures and television programs that qualify for nomination. Each member then votes and ranks five nominees within each award category. Entries with the most nomination rankings are announced at a press conference and a final ballot is sent to HFPA members to submit a final vote. The results of the final votes are only made public at the Golden Globe Awards ceremony. The Golden Globe Awards are held annually in mid-January.
